یہ واقعہ امیرالمؤمنین حضرت علی کرم اللہ وجہہ کے دور مبارک کا ہے۔ دو مسافر کافی چلنے کے بعد تھک گئے تو انہیں شدید بھوک محسوس ہوئی۔ دونوں ایک سایہ دار درخت کے نیچے اطمینان سے بیٹھ گئے اور اپنے اپنے توشے دسترخوان پر رکھ دیے۔ ایک کے پاس پانچ روٹیاں تھیں اور دوسرے کے پاس تین۔ ابھی کھانا شروع بھی نہیں کیا تھا کہ ایک تیسرا مسافر پاس سے گزرا، اس نے انہیں سلام کیا۔ انہوں نے سلام کا جواب دیا اور اسے کھانے کی دعوت دی، وہ بے تکلف ہو کر شریک ہو گیا۔ تینوں نے روٹیاں برابر کھائیں۔ کھانا ختم ہونے کے بعد وہ صاحب کھڑے ہوئے اور ان دونوں کے پاس آٹھ درہم رکھتے ہوئے کہا:”میں نے آپ دونوں صاحبان کا جو کھانا تناول کیا ہے اس کے عوض یہ درہم رکھ لیجئے۔”وہ صاحب تو دام دے کر چلے گئے مگر ان دونوں حضرات کے درمیان بٹوارے کو لے کر تنازعہ (جھگڑا) شروع ہو گیا۔ جن صاحب کی پانچ روٹیاں تھیں ان کا کہنا تھا کہ پانچ درہم میرے اور تین تمہارے۔ انہوں نے یہ فیصلہ شاید اس لیے کیا کہ وہ سمجھ رہے تھے کہ رقم دینے والے نے آٹھ درہم اس لیے دیے کہ ہر روٹی کے عوض ایک درہم دیا جائے۔ اس لیے پانچ روٹی کے مالک اپنے حق میں پانچ درہم رکھنا چاہتے تھے اور دوسرے صاحب کو تین روٹیوں کے عوض تین درہم دینا چاہتے تھے۔دوسرے صاحب تین درہم لینے کے لیے تیار نہیں تھے، ان کا کہنا تھا کہ یہ رقم چونکہ دونوں کو ایک ساتھ دی گئی ہے، اس لیے اس کے برابر حصے کیجیے، اس طرح میرے حصے میں چار درہم آنے چاہئیں۔ وہ چار درہم لینے کے لیے بضد تھے۔آخر باہمی گفت و شنید (کہنے سننے) سے مسئلہ حل نہ ہو سکا تو وہ امیرالمؤمنین حضرت علی علیہ السلام کی بارگاہ میں فیصلے کے لیے حاضر ہوئے۔ دونوں نے پورا واقعہ تفصیل سے بیان کر دیا۔ پورا واقعہ سننے کے بعد آپ نے تین روٹی والے سے فرمایا کہ جب تمہارا ساتھی تین درہم تمہیں دینے کے لیے تیار ہے تو تم تین درہم پر راضی ہو جاؤ۔ لیکن وہ چار پر ہی اڑ گیا۔ آپ نے اس سے فرمایا:”ویسے وہ تمہیں تین درہم دے کر تم پر احسان ہی کرنا چاہتا ہے، ورنہ انصاف کا تقاضہ یہ ہے کہ تمہیں ایک ہی درہم ملنا چاہیے۔”اس شخص نے بہت ہی ادب سے کہا:”سبحان اللہ! اگر انصاف کا یہی تقاضہ ہے تو مجھے اس کی وجہ بتائیے، میں اسے قبول کرلوں گا۔”حضرت علی علیہ السلام نے اسے سمجھاتے ہوئے فرمایا:”روٹیاں آٹھ تھیں، اور کھانے والے تین۔ ظاہر ہے کہ تین پر آٹھ برابر تقسیم نہیں ہو سکتے۔ اس لیے مانا یہ جائے گا کہ سب نے برابر روٹیاں کھائی ہیں تو سب کو مساوی کرنے کے لیے روٹیوں کے حصہ یا ٹکڑے مانے جائیں۔ ہر روٹی کو تین ٹکڑوں میں تقسیم کیا جائے۔ اس طرح آٹھ روٹیوں کے چوبیس (۲۴) ٹکڑے ہوئے۔ اس حساب سے ہر شخص نے روٹی کے آٹھ ٹکڑے کھائے۔ اب چونکہ تمہاری تین روٹیاں تھیں، اس لیے اس کے نو (۹) ٹکڑے ہوئے، جن میں سے آٹھ ٹکڑے تم نے کھالئے، باقی بچا ایک ٹکڑا جو تیسرے شخص نے کھایا۔ تمہارے ساتھی کے پاس پانچ روٹیاں تھیں، ان کے پندرہ ٹکڑے ہوئے جن میں سے آٹھ ٹکڑے اس نے کھائے، باقی بچے سات ٹکڑے جو تیسرے صاحب نے کھائے۔ تو معلوم ہوا کہ اس شخص نے تمہاری روٹی کا صرف ایک ٹکڑا ہی کھایا، اس لیے تمہارا حق صرف ایک درہم ہے، اور تیسرے نے اس ساتھی کی روٹی کے سات ٹکڑے کھائے، اس لیے اس کا حق سات درہم ہے۔”وہ شخص اس فیصلے پر راضی ہو گیا۔ غور فرمائیے، مقدمہ کتنا پیچیدہ تھا اور کتنی آسانی سے فیصلہ ہو گیا۔

In the time of Amir-ul-Momineen Hazrat Ali (Karam Allah Wajhahu), two travelers stopped to rest and eat after a long journey. One had five breads and the other had three. Before they could begin, a third hungry traveler passed by and was invited to join. The three of them ate together, equally.
After the meal, the third traveler, grateful for their generosity, placed eight dirhams before leaving. What seemed like a simple gesture quickly turned into a dispute — how should the money be divided?
The one with five breads claimed five dirhams, leaving three for his companion. The man with three breads disagreed, insisting the money be split equally, with each receiving four dirhams. Unable to resolve the matter, they brought the case to Hazrat Ali (عليه السلام), seeking a fair judgment.

By dividing each of the eight breads into three pieces (a total of 24 pieces), it was determined that each of the three men ate 8 pieces. The man with 3 breads contributed 9 pieces in total, of which he ate 8 — only 1 piece went to the guest. The other man contributed 15 pieces, of which he ate 8 — meaning 7 went to the guest. Therefore, the rightful division of the 8 dirhams was 7 for the one with 5 breads, and 1 for the one with 3.
